Does High School Tennis Hurt Your UTR?
Usually not. UTR leaves out blowout wins over much weaker players. The real risk is the upset, not the 6-0, 6-0. Here's how school matches count.

The whisper in every academy goes like this: skip school season, it'll kill your rating. UTR's own rules say a win over a much weaker player is one match that can't touch it. When you're rated more than 2.00 above an opponent and you win, UTR leaves that match out of your rating. Here's how the math works, and where school season can actually cost you.
How UTR scores a match
Your UTR is a weighted average of up to 30 of your most recent match ratings from the last 12 months. Each match rating comes from the share of games you won compared with what the algorithm expected. In UTR's words, "the player who performs better than the algorithm's expectation will see their match rating go up while the other player's match rating will go down."
Not every match counts the same. UTR weighs four things: the match format, how close the two ratings are, how reliable your opponent's rating is, and how recent the match was. The bigger the rating gap, the less the match counts.
The blowout doesn't count
UTR excludes a match when "there is a UTR Rating difference of more than 2.00 and the higher-rated player wins as expected." The result still shows on your profile. It just isn't used in your rating.
Lopsided matches are common in school tennis. In 2017, UTR's own data found only 18 to 20 percent of high school matches were competitive, meaning 6-3, 6-4 or closer. UTR's FAQ says it plainly: "Playing against lower-rated opponents does not necessarily hurt your UTR Rating; in some cases, it can boost it."
Where the risk really is
The upset is what counts. UTR again: "If a lower-rated player wins the match, this result will count towards each players rating." A flat Tuesday dual match against a kid you should beat is where a rating can take a real hit. That's the same problem every player faces, and losing to worse players has a lot more to do with the head than the schedule.
There's a quieter version too. Inside that 2.00 gap, winning isn't enough. If you're the favorite and win by fewer games than the algorithm expected, your match rating for that day can come in lower than your current rating. Short formats count a little less. UTR says 8-game pro sets "receive slightly less weight" than best-of-three matches.
Do school matches even count?
Yes, when they're official. UTR says results from verified providers, "such as official high school matches," count toward your Verified UTR, the number it says college coaches look at. How that works depends on your state. Kentucky's high school association made UTR mandatory for tennis results starting with the 2022 season, while Georgia's says UTR is not required for all schools. Doubles are rated separately from singles.
You can't pick and choose. UTR says the rating "cannot be altered manually." It will fix a wrong or missing score, but a real result stays.
What school season actually costs
The math isn't the problem. Time is. School season can mean weeks of practice with no one at your level, and fewer tournament weekends. Ricky Becker, director of tennis at the Glen Oaks Club on Long Island, wrote that playing high school tennis "reflects well to colleges but it really doesn't make very much difference to a college coach."
So decide on what the season gives you, not on what it does to a number. Team, rivalry and playing for something bigger than your rating are real. Whether high school tennis is worth it breaks that down, and the UTR college coaches look for tells you how much the number matters in the first place.
Build a profile that does the work for you.
Can winning a tennis match lower your UTR?
It can. UTR rates each match by the share of games you won compared with what it expected. If you're within 2.00 of your opponent and win by fewer games than expected, your match rating can come in lower than your current rating. If you're more than 2.00 above them and win, the match isn't counted at all.
Do high school matches count toward UTR?
Official high school matches count toward a player's Verified UTR, according to UTR. How results get reported depends on the state. Kentucky's high school association made UTR mandatory for tennis results in 2022, while other states, such as Georgia, leave it to schools.
Does playing weaker opponents hurt your UTR?
Not necessarily. UTR says playing lower-rated opponents "does not necessarily hurt your UTR Rating" and can even raise it. Wins over players rated more than 2.00 below you are left out, but losses to lower-rated players count.
